Cultural Reflections Project 1: The Last Word, Swedish education articles
The "Last Word" activity parallels a trend in Swedish education, the study circle. The idea behind the study circle is learning through open discussion where all participants are equal. I read a quote from an article on Sweden's education system, then each other person in the group tries to guess why I chose that quote. I get the last word, discussing the quote and why I chose it after others have their say. Then someone else reads a quote, and we take turns until everyone has had the last word. |
During The Last Word, our group had a lively discussion about the difference between student compliance and student engagement. As a teacher and as someone who loves to collaborate and combine with people of all kinds, I couldn't imagine choosing compliant students over engaged students. However, there are many classroom situations where compliance is valued over engagement. Sit quietly and do as you are told, or ask thought-provoking questions that may not fit what is currently expected? I choose bold and off-task over bland and compliant any day. I'll hold no noses to the grindstone!
So engagement looks good on paper. But all-inspiration-all-the-time creates a world where goals are rarely met and car accidents are the norm. Teachers and students are at our best when we are compliant enough to get along, engaged enough to be fulfilled and maybe even to inspire others, and discerning enough to know when to comply and when to follow our inspiration in the moment.

Cultural Reflections Project 3: Travel Writing
Drottingholm palace from the outside is a delight to the eyes and ears. Gulls swooped and call over the lake that winds around the castle, while swans and kayaks shared the water. Gusts of cool wind animated the trees. Grinning, I shuffled in side in a sea of gawk, not knowing what to expect. I'll admit it was a bit of a letdown. Tourists crawled over the red marble, flashing cameras at ancient priceless furniture and oozing aahs at stuffy portraits. Bleh. I was late for my tour group after losing my shoes, but by the time I joined them in the last few rooms, I was grateful for the tardy. A giggle escaped me as I saw that some of my group had mastered the polite-but-long-suffering Swedish look that isn’t quite an American eye-roll, and they were practicing it here in the residence of the royal family.
Back outside, however, was a lovely oasis full of surprises...
