Heidi Miles PortfolioI'm a first grade teacher at Forest View in Durham. I grew up in California and graduated from UC Irvine with a Bachelors of Arts in Sociology and a minor in Education. After college I joined Americorps and worked in New Orleans rebuilding houses. Before becoming a teacher at Forest View in Durham, I worked in New Orleans Schools as a Reading Interventionist in a middle school and then a long term sub as a 7th Grade English Teacher. I also was an Instructional Assistant at Forest View for First Grade before becoming the lead teacher. Finally, last year, I graduated with my Masters in Elementary Education at North Carolina State University. Some of my farvorite things to do are hike, read, travel and walk my two dogs.

Cultural Reflections Project 1: The Last Word, Swedish education articles
During the Last Word project we all shared different quotes from the article and then people guessed why we chose it, then we got the last word. During this time our group spent some time discussing how the articles all seemed to do some amount of America bashing. We also spent some time talking about how some of us have experienced struggles with teachers who are old school and unwilling to change. We also talked about students and their engagement in learning and how teachers can cultivate this. A few of us shared examples of how our classroom may seem semi-chaotic at times, but students are engaged and how other classrooms are silent, with students "seemingly" engaged. One of the first quotes we discussed was from Progressive Educational Practices and Environments in Sweden where it said “Teachers and administrators were reluctant to talk about the transition from a relatively autocratic leadership (or the “British style that Americans seem to like,” as one upper secondary teacher said) to an egalitarian, democratic style.” We talked for awhile about this one pertaining to teachers who don't want to change. We also discussed this quote "Ultimately, the driving force behind any popular movement, and an indispensable condition for it to attract supporters, is the existence of a strong idea, a desirable and necessary goal." (page 247) from Popular education in times of societal transformation—A Swedish perspective. This quote brought up the idea of revolution and teaching that and cultivating that, especially in how we teach and what we teach! Overall, our group was definitely on the same page and agreed on most things and even had chosen some of the same quotes.

Cultural Reflections Project 2: Swedish Book Club (GoodReads)
A Man Called Ove was one of those stories that sticks with you. I love the character Ove and I love how Fredrik draws you into his struggle through his life post wife passing away. I also enjoyed that the book touched on so many feelings and brought out a lot of emotion in me while I read it. I found myself laughing one minute, angry the next, the curious and finally sadden by Ove's sadness. I also felt like the next door neighbors and the neighborhood itself was another interesting component to the story and I enjoyed how many different kinds of people were in the story. People from other countries, different races, sexualities, and age. It really made it a story for anyone to read! I highly recommend reading this story!
