Christine Preddy PortfolioMy name is Christine Preddy, I am excited to be on this team of teachers learning and experiencing Sweden this summer. I teach 5th grade to a bunch of crazy, wonderful humans in Hillsborough.
Before coming to North Carolina I taught environmental education in California and New York. I love strolling in the woods, camping, traveling and taking pictures. My other pastimes include swimming, cooking, drinking coffee and reading. I'm always looking for new outdoor places to explore, kayak or hike-- so feel free to share! I'm excited to travel, think, reflect, taste, explore Sweden wearing my teacher lens, with these other wonderful teachers. |

Cultural Reflections Project 1: The Last Word, Swedish education articles
In the Old North State,
on a campus made of red clay,
at a long, white table,
four concerned souls
leaned in.
Could we wait to have
the
last
word?
The articles we mused over
presented the Swedish Schools as
shiny,
clear,
trusting of their people.
Building young minds, into
careful
thoughtful citizens,
And we were unsure
of the future of our
American
kids.
And our
American
Teachers.
Is it all as shiny
as it seems?
Can we shine up this business?
How do give grass roots,
Here,
at the white tables,
to the red bricks and
for the Old North State?
Cultural Reflections Project 2: Swedish Book Club (GoodReads)
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is a winding road of a crime drama, unfolding into more and more complicated layers as Journalist Mikael Blomkvist searches for the answers to a 40 year old mystery of a missing girl. Set in modern Sweden, Mikael, suffering his own difficulties being dethroned from his magazine due to a libel scandal, quietly makes his way into a new mess. Eventually he is aided by a young hacker, Lisbeth Salander who helps him discover what happened to the rich industrialist's niece, Harriet.
The story starts slowly, takes awhile to get into, but then gets motion and turns in unexpected ways. History of Sweden, romance, violence towards woman, scandal, family matters and madness all make for a long, yet interesting story. The difficulty with this book, beyond the slow background story of Blomkvist's personal scandal, are the names of the Vanger family. Characters enter and exit the story, some are mentioned in passing. Drawing a map of the names can be helpful for figuring out who Stieg Larsson is referring to as he weaves the complicated drama.
